11.03.08 Liberty Means Liberty

Hi. My name is Heidi. I work at NARAL Pro-Choice America, but my heart is in De Smet, South Dakota where I was born and raised. Most of my friends and family still live there.
South Dakotans are strong, brave, caring people who hold our values dear. That’s why I asked our president, Nancy, if I could write to you. Some of you may remember me back from 2006 when we worked to defeat the first South Dakota abortion ban. I knocked on doors and made calls, all of which was possible because of your support. Together, we stopped the ban!
I’m going to cut to the chase and ask you to donate $10 or more to the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families now to help defeat Measure 11 - the latest attempt to outlaw abortion in South Dakota.
The most current poll from my home state’s largest paper, The Argus Leader, shows that voters are evenly split on Measure 11. The poll’s key finding: 12 percent of voters are undecided - that’s more than one in 10. We need your help to break the tie.
Casey Murschel, the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota, called to tell us the latest. She says they need all the help they can get. I know Casey means it because my mom’s been telling me about the horrible TV ad running non-stop to push this ban through. The ad, paid for by “Yes on 11,” criticizes national organizations like NARAL Pro-Choice America for supporting our grassroots campaign. The “Yes on 11″ folks conveniently ignore the list of national right-wing groups supporting their cause with dollars.
This horrible ban really could pass! I don’t want that legacy for my home state. I don’t want South Dakotan women and families to suffer, and I surely don’t want Americans to face a challenge to Roe v. Wade just because a vocal minority in South Dakota succeeded while most of America didn’t know about their awful misinformation!
But we South Dakotans tend not to mince words, so let me get back to my point.
Times are tough. We’ve all been asked for money by more groups than we can count, but this thing in South Dakota could go either way. So I asked Nancy if we could personally ask each of you to give just $10 or more directly to the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families to try to help the people in my home state before it’s too late.
The South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families is doing everything it can to defeat this ban again, and last-minute money from pro-choice Americans like you could help put their effort over the top through phone banks, canvasses, GOTV work, and, most importantly, to keep their ads in front of folks on TV. Please donate $10, or more, to help the people in my home state defeat the ban.
I’ve rambled, but I’ve done so because I believe you care. Please prove me right!
Respectfully,

Heidi C.
P.S. We are unified in voting NO on Measure 11. So on behalf of Casey at NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota, Nancy at NARAL Pro-Choice America, and me, a proud South Dakotan, I’m asking you to support the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families right now by giving $10 or more.
